How to Pick Ripe Fruit
Squeeze gently, smell the stem end, and check the weight. Color alone is the least reliable sign.
| Fruit | Ripe when… |
|---|---|
| Avocado | Yields to gentle palm pressure; the stem cap pops off revealing green underneath |
| Mango | Soft at the cheeks, sweet smell at the stem, slight give |
| Peach / nectarine | Fragrant, yields slightly, background color golden (not green) |
| Pineapple | Sweet smell at the base, a leaf pulls out with light resistance, feels heavy |
| Cantaloupe | Sweet smell at the blossom end, slight give, beige netting (not green) |
| Citrus | Heavy for its size — weight means juice |
| Berries | Fully colored, plump, fragrant; check the bottom of the box for stains |
| Banana | Yellow with a few brown speckles for eating; green tips for cooking |
Speed it up: a paper bag with a banana traps ethylene and ripens fruit in 1–2 days. The fridge pauses ripening — use it once fruit is ripe.
