Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Twenty minutes, three ingredients, and it beats the can by a mile: tart berries, orange and sugar, cooked until they pop and thicken.

Ingredients

  • 1 12-oz bag fresh cranberries, rinsed and picked over
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt

Steps

  1. Combine the cranberries, sugar, orange juice and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Reduce to a simmer and cook 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most berries have popped and the sauce thickens.
  4. Stir in the orange zest and remove from the heat. The sauce thickens more as it cools.
  5. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until serving.
Serve with: roast turkey, ham or prime rib, and spread leftovers on sandwiches.

Make it up to 3 days ahead — cranberry sauce keeps beautifully in the fridge and frees up stove space on the big day.
